China Telecom (Europe) Ltd. (CTE) welcomed clients, business partners, and staff to celebrate the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on Friday 13 September 2019.
The party started at the Royal Albert Dock on the north bank of the Thames, with guests and passers-by enjoying the first-ever CTE dragon boat racing championship. More than 100 clients and CTE employees rowed in six teams. The competition was fierce, and the teams were cheered on by crowds on shore and encouraged by Chinese drumming. After battling the winds and waves for more than two hours in a series of heats, four teams won places in the grand final. The Green Dragon [Chenglong] team triumphed, with the Blue Dragon [Qinglong] and Black Dragon [Molong] teams in second and third place.

One of the Blue Dragon team members said, “I really appreciated the joyful atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival. This is the first time I’ve been able to truly celebrate this important festival in the UK. I hope the China Telecom dragon boat race will become a regular event.”
The celebrations continued into the evening, with nearly 200 CTE clients and business partners joining other guests to welcome the autumn moon and share authentic Chinese food in a traditional Chinese festival atmosphere, while building stronger Chinese-British friendships.

After the prize giving for the winning dragon boat rowers, the CTE team introduced their British clients, and partners from across Europe, to moon-watching and riddle games, including solving traditional puzzles hanging from colourful lanterns. One European client said, “I’ve enjoyed learning about Chinese history and the legend of the moon while we’ve been playing these guessing games. I’ll be reading more about it online when I get home tonight.”
British and other European clients thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture. And CTE staff and their clients took the time to get to know each other better. Whether they were rowing in the dragon boats, cheering on the rowers, or appreciating the festive food it was a great way to relax together, before teaming up to test their wits on the ancient riddles.
CTE now looks forward to inviting their British and other European friends and clients to more traditional Chinese celebrations, as well as to their second annual Dragon Boat championship in 2020.
