A special gift for Verona from China Telecom (Europe) Ltd.

On 18^th March 2020, a box with ‘Amici sempre’ (friends forever) written on it arrived in Verona, Italy. It came from China Telecom (Europe) Ltd. (CTE) as a gesture of solidarity and friendship in these challenging times. On 10^th March, Italy became the first European country to impose a nationwide lockdown. The contents will make a real difference to local people.

The box contained 2,000 surgical masks, a gift from CTE to the Mayor of Verona. They are for city employees whose work involves contact with the public, including counter staff, social service workers and local police officers. The masks have become increasingly scarce, and they’ll be an invaluable addition to the protective measures already adopted in the Italian city, such as keeping at a safe distance.

Mayor Federico Sboarina said, “Finding medical masks has become extremely difficult, so I want to thank China Telecom and its managers for their kind gift. Our city employees are working to keep the local government running and guarantee essential services. Our priority is to protect their health, just as they’re protecting the residents they meet. These masks will help us to guarantee everyone’s safety.”

The cities of Verona and Hangzhou were twinned a year ago in March 2019. Since then they’ve been building strong connections. Last September Mayor  Sboarina led a delegation from Verona on a visit to the headquarters of China Telecom, one of the largest telecommunications groups in the world. A month later CTE representatives came to Verona to sign a memorandum of understanding with Consorzio ZAI for the development of logistics and telematics in Verona’s Interport.

CTE looks forward to strengthening our bonds of friendship in Italy as we work towards a brighter future.
